Standards-Based Assessment for Two, Three, and Four-Wheeled Motorcycles

A motorcycle, known in French as motocyclettes and in English as motorcycle, is a motor vehicle with two, three, or four wheels. Originally designed, built, and marketed by German inventors, motorcycles are classified under Group L vehicles according to the Iranian National Standard No. 7558:2022.

Vehicle Classification for Inspection

Based on National Standards of Iran (ISIRI)

Group L1e (Light Two-Wheel Motor Vehicles)

Two wheels and equipped with a powertrain according to clause 3-5.
Cylinder capacity ≤ 50 cc, if a positive spark-ignition combustion engine is part of the powertrain configuration.
Maximum design speed ≤ 45 km/h.
Maximum continuous rated or net power ≤ 4000 W.
Maximum mass equal to the technically permissible mass declared by the manufacturer.
L1e-A Pedal Moped
L1e-B Two-Wheel Moped

Group L2e (Three-Wheel Moped)

Cylinder capacity ≤ 50 cc, if powered by a positive spark-ignition engine, or cylinder capacity ≤ 500 cc, if powered by a compression-ignition engine.
Maximum design speed ≤ 45 km/h.
Maximum continuous rated or net power ≤ 4000 W.
Mass in running order ≤ 270 kg.
Equipped with a maximum of 2 seating positions (including the driver).
L2e-P Three-Wheel Moped for Passenger Transport
L2e-U Three-Wheel Moped for Cargo Transport

Group L3e (Two-Wheel Motorcycle)

Two wheels and equipped with a powertrain according to clause 3-5.
Maximum mass equal to the technically permissible mass declared by the manufacturer.
A two-wheeled vehicle that is not classified in group L1e.
L3e-A1 Low-Performance Motorcycle
L3e-A2 Medium-Performance Motorcycle
L3e-A3 High-Performance Motorcycle
L3e-AXE X=1,2 or 3 Enduro
L3e-AXT X=1,2 or 3 Trial

Group L4e (Two-Wheel Motorcycle with Sidecar)

A main motor vehicle as per the definitions and classifications of group L3e.
The main vehicle is equipped with a sidecar.
Including the rider's position, it can have a maximum of 4 seating positions.
The sidecar can have a maximum of 2 passenger positions.
Maximum mass equal to the technically permissible mass declared by the manufacturer.
L4e No Subgroup

Group L5e (Three-Wheel Motor Vehicle)

Three wheels and equipped with a powertrain according to clause 3-5.
Mass in running order ≤ 1000 kg.
A three-wheel vehicle that is not classified in group L2e.
L5e-A Three-Wheel Vehicle for Passenger Transport
L5e-B Three-Wheel Commercial Vehicle

Group L6e (Four-Wheel Motor Vehicle)

Four wheels and equipped with a powertrain according to clause 3-5.
Maximum design speed ≤ 45 km/h.
Mass in running order ≤ 425 kg.
Cylinder capacity ≤ 50 cc if powered by a positive spark-ignition engine.
Cylinder capacity ≤ 500 cc if powered by a compression-ignition engine.
Equipped with a maximum of 2 seating positions (including the driver).
L6e-A Light On-Road Quadricycle
L6e-B Light All-Terrain Quadricycle
L6e-BU For Cargo Transport
L6e-BP For Passenger Transport

Group L7e (Four-Wheel Motor Vehicle)

Four wheels and equipped with a powertrain according to clause 3-5.
Mass in running order:
a) For passenger transport ≤ 598 kg.
b) For cargo transport ≤ 988 kg.
L7e vehicles that do not meet L6e specifications.
